Help us by writing to the media

One of the most effective ways you can help the CRLU effort is to get media attention. We ask that you write to the editors of the publications below, using these guidelines:

  • Review the CRLU core concerns and possibly compose a statement around one or more of those concerns – crlu-avl.org/core-concerns

  • Do a little bit of research to back up your points (contact the planning committee if you’d like assistance with technical data – cornerstoneavl-planning@googlegroups.com)

    • Instead of saying, “My property value will decrease,” give your Real Estate Agent a call and ask him/her to give an opinion.

  • Do not generalize – be specific and put a personal face on the issues

    • Instead of saying, “Traffic will get worse,” give specific examples of how traffic will be a problem; ie, “I live on the backside of a blind corner and have to back out of my driveway due to the way it is constructed.  I already have near misses when backing out, and there are only 10 houses up the road from me.  Adding an additional 72 residences is going to make leaving my house a hazard.”

  • Be specific about how the development will personally affect you

    • Instead of saying, “These buildings are too close to our houses,” give specific details; ie, “A 50-foot building is being constructed 10 feet from my property line with no buffer.  I’m concerned about how the construction process could damage my house and the long-term effects of run-off and erosion caused by this large structure.”

  • Cite specific incidents that have occurred that could be worsened by the project

    • “A tree fell across the road back in 2013, and all ten residents at the end of the road were stuck in our houses for two days.  Adding another 72 residences at the end of a road with one way in and out is a huge risk.  If there is a medical emergency or a fire, no one could get to those people.  How will they get to work or school?”
